Marinade staked SOLmSOL price and how to buy
SolanaThe longest-running liquid staking token on Solana.
What mSOL is
mSOL is Marinade's liquid staking token and the oldest one on Solana still in wide use. Deposit SOL, receive mSOL, and the underlying stake is spread across a large set of validators chosen by Marinade's delegation strategy rather than a single operator.
Like other liquid staking tokens it does not pay out. One mSOL buys more SOL as time passes, so the return shows up in the exchange rate rather than in your balance.
Marinade's pitch has always been decentralisation: it deliberately spreads stake across many independent validators instead of concentrating it, which is better for the network even though it makes little difference to what a holder earns.
You need SOL or USDC first
mSOL is bought by swapping something you already hold for it, so an empty wallet cannot buy any. If yours is empty, start here.
How to get your first SOLWhat mSOL is used for
mSOL is the longest-running liquid staking token on Solana and is still integrated across a wide set of protocols, which is the main practical reason people hold it rather than something newer.
It spreads stake across many independent validators instead of concentrating it. That makes little difference to what a holder earns and a real difference to how decentralised Solana's validator set is, which is the argument Marinade has always made for itself.
It works the same way as any liquid staking receipt: the stake earns while the token stays tradeable, so it can be swapped, lent or used as collateral without unstaking first.
How mSOL trades
mSOL trades in decent size against SOL and USDC, but its share of Solana staking has fallen as JitoSOL has grown, and liquidity has followed. A small swap is unremarkable; a large one will show more price impact than the equivalent trade in JitoSOL. Read the price impact in the quote rather than assuming the two staking tokens cost the same to move, because they no longer do.
Common mistakes
Expecting a payout is the same confusion mSOL shares with every liquid staking token. Nothing is distributed. The exchange rate against SOL rises instead, so the balance in the wallet never moves.
Assuming the older token is the more liquid one is now wrong. mSOL was the original and is no longer the largest, and the difference shows up as price impact on a large swap.
The stake pool is a smart contract, which is a risk staking directly with a validator does not carry.
A crowded exit can push mSOL below the pool's own valuation, because unstaking through the pool takes an epoch while selling is instant. That gap is what impatience costs.
