About Ethereum

Ethereum is the network the other four here are built on or modelled after. It launched in 2015, introduced general-purpose smart contracts, and moved from mining to proof of stake in September 2022. The ERC-20 standard that every token on these pages follows began here.

Gas is paid in ETH, and Ethereum is the most expensive of the five networks to use. Fees rise and fall with demand: a swap can cost well under a dollar in a quiet hour and several dollars in a busy one, and a token sale that needs an approval first pays twice. On a small amount the fee can be a real share of the trade, which is the main reason the layer 2 networks exist.

What it offers in return is the deepest liquidity and the longest track record of any smart-contract chain. MetaMask, Coinbase Wallet, Rabby, Rainbow and hardware wallets such as Ledger and Trezor all support it without any setup.
