What LINK is

LINK is the token of Chainlink, the oracle network that brings outside data — asset prices above all — into smart contracts on many blockchains. Lending markets and derivatives protocols rely on those feeds to know what collateral is worth, which makes Chainlink one of the most widely used pieces of infrastructure in DeFi. Chainlink also runs a protocol for sending messages and tokens between blockchains.

LINK has been an Ethereum token since its sale in 2017, and this is the original contract. It pays the node operators who provide data, and it is staked in Chainlink's own staking programme on Ethereum as a guarantee of their service.

Its price moves with the broader market and with how much of the industry depends on Chainlink's services; announcements of partnerships with banks and other financial institutions have moved it at times.

Buying LINK, step by step

  1. 1

    Connect an EVM wallet

Open the swap panel and connect MetaMask, Coinbase Wallet or any browser wallet that supports Ethereum. On a phone, the same wallets open through their own apps. Privacc only reads your public address — it cannot move your funds.

  2. 2

Hold some ETH on Ethereum for gas

Every Ethereum transaction is paid for in ETH, whatever token you are swapping, so a wallet with no ETH cannot buy LINK. The panel opens on Ethereum; if your wallet is set to another network it will ask to switch.

  3. 3

    Check the token is LINK

The panel is already set to LINK at the contract address on this page, so there is nothing to search for. If you pick it by hand, compare the address rather than the name — copies with the same symbol exist.

  4. 4

    Approve, then swap

If you pay with a token rather than ETH, your wallet first asks you to approve the router to spend it. That is a separate transaction with its own gas fee, needed once per token. Then check the quote — the LINK you receive, the price impact and the fees — and sign the swap.

  5. 5

    Find it in your wallet

The Chainlink arrives in the wallet you signed from once the transaction confirms. If your wallet does not list it, add it as a custom token using the contract address on this page.

LINK contract address on Ethereum

Token names and symbols on Ethereum are not unique — anyone can deploy a contract called LINK. The address is the only thing that identifies the real one. Check it, never the name:

Common mistakes

  1. Other tokens use the LINK symbol. The address on this page is Chainlink's own on Ethereum.

  2. Buying LINK does not stake it. Chainlink staking is a separate step with its own rules and limits on how much can be staked.

  3. Gas on Ethereum can be a large share of a small LINK purchase. Bridged LINK on Arbitrum and BNB Chain is cheaper to trade, but each is a separate contract on its own network.

LINK questions

What does Chainlink actually do?

It runs networks of independent nodes that fetch data such as asset prices and deliver it to smart contracts, which cannot read the outside world on their own. It also offers a protocol for moving messages and tokens between blockchains.

What gives LINK value?

It is how Chainlink's node operators are paid and what they stake. The price reflects what the market expects demand for Chainlink's services to be, and it moves with the crypto market as a whole.

Is this the original LINK?

Yes. LINK was created on Ethereum, and versions on other networks are bridged or pegged copies of this contract.

Where can I buy LINK on Ethereum?

On this page. Connect an EVM wallet with some ETH for gas, enter an amount and sign. The LINK goes straight to your wallet without passing through Privacc.

Do I need an account to buy LINK?

No. Privacc has no accounts and no sign-up because it never takes custody of your funds. You connect a wallet, sign a transaction, and the tokens go straight to you.

What does it cost to buy LINK on Ethereum?

The Ethereum network fee, paid in ETH; a one-off approval fee the first time you sell a given token; the price impact of the route; and any service fee. All of it is in the quote you see before you sign.
