What AAVE is

AAVE is the governance token of Aave, a lending protocol where anyone can deposit crypto to earn interest or borrow against it. It is one of the largest DeFi protocols by deposits and runs on Ethereum and many other networks.

Holders vote on how the protocol is run — which assets can be lent and borrowed, at what rates and against what collateral — and AAVE can be staked to help cover the protocol if it takes a loss. The project began as ETHLend in 2017, and its token moved from LEND to AAVE in 2020.

Its price moves with the amount of lending and borrowing on Aave, the fees it earns, and the health of DeFi generally.

Connect an EVM wallet

Common mistakes

Holding AAVE is not lending on Aave. Deposits in the protocol earn interest; the governance token in a wallet earns nothing.
Staking AAVE for rewards is not risk-free. Staked tokens back the protocol against losses and can be used to cover them.

What is AAVE used for?

Voting on the protocol's governance and staking as a backstop against losses, in return for rewards. You do not need it to lend or borrow on Aave.

Is Aave the same thing as AAVE?

Aave is the lending protocol; AAVE is its governance token. Using the protocol and holding the token are separate things with separate risks.

Can Aave lose depositors' money?

It is a set of smart contracts, and any contract can have a flaw. Borrowers can also be liquidated automatically if their collateral falls in value. The protocol has a long record, but a long record is not a guarantee.
