What SKY is

SKY is the governance token of Sky, the protocol known as MakerDAO until it rebranded in 2024. Maker created DAI, one of the first decentralised stablecoins, and Sky now issues USDS, an upgraded dollar stablecoin, alongside it.

SKY replaced MKR as the governance token. One MKR converts to 24,000 SKY, which is why SKY's price per token is so much smaller than MKR's was. Holders vote on the protocol's risk settings and on how its revenue is used, and part of that revenue has gone to buying SKY back.

Its price moves with the protocol's income — much of it interest earned on the assets backing USDS and DAI — and with DeFi as a whole.

Connect an EVM wallet

Hold some ETH on Ethereum for gas

If you pay with a token rather than ETH, your wallet first asks you to approve the router to spend it. That is a separate transaction with its own gas fee, needed once per token. Then check the quote — the SKY you receive, the price impact and the fees — and sign the swap.

Common mistakes

MKR and SKY are the same governance claim at different scales. Comparing their prices without the 24,000 conversion makes one look absurdly cheap or expensive.
SKY is not a stablecoin. USDS and DAI are the protocol's dollar tokens; SKY is a volatile governance token.
Gas on Ethereum can be a large share of a small SKY purchase.
