About Arbitrum
Arbitrum One is a layer 2 network on Ethereum, built by Offchain Labs and live since 2021. It is an optimistic rollup: transactions execute on Arbitrum and are posted to Ethereum, with a challenge period during which anyone can dispute a wrong result. That period is why a withdrawal to Ethereum through the official bridge takes about a week, while third-party bridges do it faster for a fee.
Gas is paid in ETH, not ARB. ARB is the network's governance token and pays for nothing. A swap usually costs a few cents, and as with Base, the ETH has to be on Arbitrum already.
It has a large DeFi ecosystem of its own, with GMX and Pendle among the names that grew up here, and Uniswap carries much of its spot liquidity. MetaMask, Rabby, Coinbase Wallet and most EVM wallets support it, some after it is added as a network.
