What BNB is

BNB is the native coin of BNB Chain. Every transaction on the network, from a token transfer to a swap, pays its gas fee in BNB, so anyone using the chain needs at least a little of it. Binance created it in 2017, originally as an Ethereum token that gave a discount on the exchange's trading fees, and moved it onto its own chains as they launched.

Its price is driven by demand for block space on BNB Chain, by its uses on Binance itself — fee discounts and access to new token launches among them — and by Binance's regular burns, which permanently remove BNB from the supply. Because so much of its demand runs through one company, news about Binance tends to move it more than news about the chain.

Inside apps BNB usually appears as WBNB, a token contract that holds BNB one-for-one so it can be traded like any other token. The swap panel handles that conversion for you, and the chart on this page is drawn from WBNB's deepest pool.

Buying BNB, step by step

  1. 1

    Connect an EVM wallet

Open the swap panel and connect MetaMask, Coinbase Wallet or any browser wallet that supports BNB Chain. On a phone, the same wallets open through their own apps. Privacc only reads your public address — it cannot move your funds.

  2. 2

Hold some BNB on BNB Chain for gas

Every BNB Chain transaction is paid for in BNB, so you need a little before you can swap anything — including for more BNB. The panel opens on BNB Chain; if your wallet is set to another network it will ask to switch.

  3. 3

    Choose what to pay with

The panel opens selling USDT for BNB. Change the top side to whatever you hold on BNB Chain. Only BNB itself or tokens on this network can be swapped here directly.

  4. 4

    Approve, then swap

If you pay with a token rather than BNB, your wallet first asks you to approve the router to spend it. That is a separate transaction with its own gas fee, needed once per token. Then check the quote — the BNB you receive, the price impact and the fees — and sign the swap.

  5. 5

    Find it in your wallet

The BNB arrives in the wallet you signed from once the transaction confirms, and shows in its main balance.

Does BNB have a contract address on BNB Chain?

BNB is BNB Chain's own coin, so it has no token contract: it lives in your wallet balance itself, which is also why it pays for gas. Apps that need it as a token use WBNB, a contract that holds BNB one-for-one. If a wallet or a list offers you a different "BNB" token on BNB Chain, it is not this. The WBNB contract is:

The swap panel on this page opens selling USDT for BNB. Either side can be changed.View on BscScan

Common mistakes

  1. Exchanges list more than one network for BNB withdrawals, and only the one labelled BNB Smart Chain, or BEP-20, lands in a wallet on this network. BNB sent on another network has not arrived where you expected it.

  2. A wallet that spends all of its BNB is stuck. Every later transaction, including selling the tokens it holds, needs BNB for gas, so some has to stay behind.

  3. WBNB and BNB are worth the same but are not the same balance. A wallet can show WBNB separately from BNB, only BNB pays for gas, and turning one into the other is a transaction of its own.

BNB questions

Why do I need BNB to buy other tokens on BNB Chain?

Because gas on BNB Chain is paid in BNB. A swap from USDT to CAKE still charges its network fee in BNB, so a wallet holding only USDT cannot send the transaction at all.

What is the difference between BNB and WBNB?

WBNB is a token contract that holds BNB one-for-one, so that BNB can be used by apps built for tokens. The price is the same. BNB is what pays for gas; WBNB cannot.

Is BNB Chain the same thing as Binance?

No, though they are closely linked. BNB Chain is a public blockchain anyone can use from their own wallet, with no Binance account. Binance created it and remains its most important backer.

How much BNB do I need for gas?

Very little. A swap usually costs a few cents' worth of BNB, so a small amount covers many transactions. Keep a margin above that, because fees rise when the network is busy.

Where can I buy BNB on BNB Chain?

On this page. Connect an EVM wallet with some BNB for gas, enter an amount and sign. The BNB goes straight to your wallet without passing through Privacc.

Do I need an account to buy BNB?

No. Privacc has no accounts and no sign-up because it never takes custody of your funds. You connect a wallet, sign a transaction, and the tokens go straight to you.

What does it cost to buy BNB on BNB Chain?

The BNB Chain network fee, paid in BNB; a one-off approval fee the first time you sell a given token; the price impact of the route; and any service fee. All of it is in the quote you see before you sign.
