Ether on BaseETH price and how to buy on Base
BaseThe coin that pays gas on Base, Coinbase's layer 2 network.
What ETH is
ETH is the gas coin on Base. Base has no token of its own, so every transaction on it — a swap, a transfer, an approval — pays its fee in ETH. It is the same asset as ether on Ethereum but a separate balance: ETH on Base lives on Base, and has to be bridged to reach Ethereum or any other network.
Fees on Base are usually a cent or less, so a small amount of ETH covers many transactions. Its price is ether's price, moved by the same things that move ETH everywhere: demand for Ethereum, staking, fund flows and the market as a whole.
In apps it appears as WETH, a wrapped contract at a fixed address that Base shares with the other networks built on the OP Stack. The chart here is drawn from WETH's deepest pool on Base, against USDC.
