What WETH is

WETH on Polygon is ether bridged from Ethereum through Polygon's own bridge. ETH locked on Ethereum is represented here as a token, which tracks ether's price and can be used by Polygon apps.

Unlike on Base or Arbitrum, ETH is not the gas coin on Polygon — POL is — so ether here is always a token, WETH, and never pays for anything itself.
