What POL is

POL is the native coin of Polygon PoS. It pays the gas for every transaction on the network and is staked by the validators who secure it. It replaced MATIC in September 2024: MATIC on the Polygon network became POL automatically, and MATIC held on Ethereum can be upgraded one-for-one.

Fees on Polygon are among the lowest of any EVM network, a fraction of a cent for a swap, so a small amount of POL goes a long way. Its price moves with activity on Polygon, with the project's plans for connecting multiple chains, and with the market as a whole.

In apps it appears as WPOL, a contract that holds POL one-for-one, and some older apps and lists still call that WMATIC. The chart here is drawn from WPOL's deepest pool, against USDT.

Buying POL, step by step

    Connect an EVM wallet

    Open the swap panel and connect MetaMask, Coinbase Wallet or any browser wallet that supports Polygon. On a phone, the same wallets open through their own apps. Privacc only reads your public address — it cannot move your funds.

    Hold some POL on Polygon for gas

    Every Polygon transaction is paid for in POL, so you need a little before you can swap anything — including for more POL. The panel opens on Polygon; if your wallet is set to another network it will ask to switch.

    The panel opens selling USDC for POL. Change the top side to whatever you hold on Polygon. Only POL itself or tokens on this network can be swapped here directly.

    Approve, then swap

    If you pay with a token rather than POL, your wallet first asks you to approve the router to spend it. That is a separate transaction with its own gas fee, needed once per token. Then check the quote — the POL you receive, the price impact and the fees — and sign the swap.

    Find it in your wallet

    The POL arrives in the wallet you signed from once the transaction confirms, and shows in its main balance.

Does POL have a contract address on Polygon?

POL is Polygon's own coin, so it has no token contract: it lives in your wallet balance itself, which is also why it pays for gas. Apps that need it as a token use WPOL, a contract that holds POL one-for-one. If a wallet or a list offers you a different "POL" token on Polygon, it is not this. The WPOL contract is:

Common mistakes

  1. Guides that say to buy MATIC for Polygon gas are out of date. Gas on Polygon is paid in POL.

  2. A wallet that spends all its POL cannot do anything else on Polygon, including selling the tokens it holds.

  3. POL on Polygon and POL on Ethereum are separate balances on separate networks. Withdrawing from an exchange on the wrong one means a bridge to fix it.

What happened to MATIC?

It was replaced by POL in September 2024. On Polygon the change was automatic; MATIC on Ethereum can be upgraded to POL one-for-one through Polygon's migration contract.

What is the difference between POL and WPOL?

WPOL is a token contract that holds POL one-for-one so apps can treat it like any other token. The value is the same. POL pays for gas; WPOL cannot.

How much POL do I need for gas?

Very little. A swap on Polygon usually costs a fraction of a cent, though fees rise when the network is busy, so keep a margin.
