How to swap tokens on Solana

by PrivaccUpdated September 21, 20263 min read

Swapping on Solana means trading one token for another directly on-chain, without an exchange account holding your money in between. You connect a wallet, approve a transaction, and the network settles it in about a second. Here is what actually happens and what to check before you sign.

What you need first

A Solana wallet such as Phantom, Solflare or Backpack, and a small amount of SOL in it. You need SOL even if you are not swapping SOL, because the network fee is always paid in SOL. A few dollars' worth is plenty for hundreds of transactions.

If your wallet is completely empty you cannot swap at all — there is nothing to pay the fee with. This is the single most common reason a first swap fails.

The five steps

1. Connect your wallet. The site requests your public address only. It cannot see your seed phrase and cannot move funds without a signature from you.

2. Pick the token you are selling and the token you are buying. Always check the contract address for anything that is not a well-known token — symbols are not unique on Solana and anyone can mint a token called USDC.

3. Enter an amount. A quote appears showing what you will receive, the route it will take, and the price impact.

4. Review the quote. Look at the amount received and the price impact before you commit. On Solana the slippage tolerance is set for you by the router.

5. Approve in your wallet. Your wallet shows the transaction for signing. Once you approve, it is broadcast and settles in roughly a second. It cannot be reversed.

Reading the quote

The rate is what you get per token sold. The price impact is how much your own order moves the price — a large order against a small pool moves it a lot. The route shows which pools the swap passes through; aggregators often split one order across several pools to get a better overall price.

Any platform fee should be visible here too, already included in the amount you see you will receive. If a site will not show you its fee before you sign, that is a reason to leave.

What it costs

Three separate things. The Solana network fee, which is a fraction of a cent and goes to validators. The price impact of your own trade, which is not a fee but does affect what you receive. And any platform fee charged by the interface you are using.

A failed transaction still burns the network fee, but your tokens stay in your wallet.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an account to swap on Solana?

No. A decentralised exchange interface has no accounts, no sign-up and no deposits. Your wallet is the only thing you connect, and your tokens never leave it until you sign a transaction.

How long does a Solana swap take?

Usually about one second once you approve it. If the network is congested your wallet may add a priority fee to get included faster.

Can a swap be reversed?

No. Once a Solana transaction is confirmed it is final. There is no chargeback and no support desk that can undo it, which is why checking the token address before signing matters.

Ready to swap?

Non-custodial, no account, and the fee is shown before you sign.
