Why Solana swaps fail, and how to fix each cause

by PrivaccUpdated September 21, 20262 min read

A failed swap on Solana is almost never a mystery. There are about five causes, and each has a specific fix. In every case your tokens stay in your wallet; the only thing you lose is the network fee, which is a fraction of a cent.

1. Not enough SOL for fees

Every Solana transaction is paid for in SOL, whatever tokens you are actually trading. If your SOL balance is zero or nearly zero, nothing will go through.

It also catches people who try to swap their entire SOL balance. Leave a small amount behind to cover the fee, plus a little for account rent if you are receiving a token you have never held before.

2. Slippage tolerance too tight

If the price moves more than your tolerance between signing and confirmation, the transaction reverts by design. That is the setting working correctly, not a bug.

Raise the tolerance a little, or trade a pair with deeper liquidity.

3. The route went stale

Aggregators build a route through specific pools. If a large trade drains one of those pools before your transaction lands, the route no longer works and the transaction fails.

Refresh the quote and try again. This is more common on thin tokens during volatile periods.

4. Network congestion

When Solana is busy, transactions without a competitive priority fee can be dropped rather than failed — they simply never get included.

Most wallets let you raise the priority fee. It is still a small amount, and it is the difference between landing and being dropped during busy periods.

5. The token itself blocks it

Some tokens are built so that buying works and selling does not. Others charge a transfer tax that breaks the expected output, or let the deployer freeze transfers.

If a token consistently fails only on the sell side, stop trying and treat the position as a loss. That is a honeypot, not a technical problem you can configure around.

Frequently asked questions

Do I lose my tokens if a swap fails?

No. A failed Solana transaction does not execute, so your tokens stay in your wallet. You lose only the network fee, which is a fraction of a cent.

Why does my swap keep getting dropped rather than failing?

Dropped usually means congestion — the transaction never made it into a block. Raising the priority fee in your wallet normally fixes it.

Ready to swap?

Non-custodial, no account, and the fee is shown before you sign.
